Joao rosario
Deep Learning Engineer @Apple
My name is João Carrilho do Rosário. I was born in Setúbal and am 30 years old (31 by the time of the conference). I didn’t grow up with a strong focus on technology, but I pursued a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at FCT-UNL. It was there that I had my first exposure to programming and developed an interest in solving problems intelligently.
My academic journey wasn’t easy—electrical engineering offers a broad curriculum, and I struggled to find the right career path for myself. However, after a few years in university, I had the opportunity to intern in Barcelona at a startup that had just begun operations. The company’s goal was to develop deep learning models to analyze media content, helping to build relationships between recognized elements to assist text and video editors, particularly in newsrooms.
For two years, I spent my university breaks interning in Barcelona, working on frontend, backend, and eventually deep learning. That experience made me realize I wanted to be in Barcelona and pursue a career as a Deep Learning Engineer. After completing my internships, I was given the opportunity to write my master’s thesis at the same company.
My thesis focused on Speaker Diarization, and since then, my work has been primarily related to Speech-to-Text and NLP. After completing my thesis, I continued working at the company full-time, and a year later, I transitioned to Apple, where I have been working in the same field ever since.
